Life’s lessons come in many forms and can be quite
significant. You cannot rid yourself of fear and learn something unless you are
first willing to take some action and do something. Fear is the most
debilitating self-defeating thing we can give ourselves. If we live our lives
from a position of weakness we avoid fear like the plague and will do anything
to avoid the pain that we perceive will come if we confront our fears.
Dr. Wayne W Dyer says we should educate ourselves with the
following maxim:-
I hear: I forget
I see: I Remember
I Do: I Understand
You will never really understand what it is to lose your
fears if you are never willing to risk anything and confront it head on. You
can talk yourself until you are blue in the face, sulk and brood until your
skin itches from head to foot or your teeth fall out. You can listen to those
who tell you there is nothing to fear but until you take that first step and do
something, risk something nothing will change.
No one teaches you about fear and no one can teach you not
to be afraid. It is a part of life we just cannot avoid. It is there no matter
what we do and never goes away. Your fears are as unique to you as they are to
the next person and only you can confront them nobody else is going to solve
that for you.
Cast your mind back to when you were a kid, perhaps at the
beach. Your parents likely said don’t go in the water it’s dangerous. Only go
in when you can swim. What sort of advice is that really in the logic of
learning in life? It’s like telling a baby don’t stand up until you can walk. A
bit catch 22 really. I remember I put a spoon in the electric fire as a baby.
My parents must have been beside themselves. I learned a lesson then but was
lucky to be alive I guess. Doing things in life though have lessons and if you
stop doing anything you will only see life from someone else’s perspective not
yours and learn nothing. Make sure you don’t immobilize yourself with fear
because of other people’s expectations for you. Don’t make yourself a victim
and blame everyone and everything around you for things that have past, they
cannot be changed and that is no excuse for not taking action with something
today.
All your childhood experiences are a result of your parents
doing the best they could with the knowledge they had. That should not stop you
now experimenting and changing yourself today with what you know now. You will
stumble, fall and fail along the way but this learning curve will increase your
chances of success and wisdom. If you refuse to risk anything and try then you
are effectively saying I refuse to know and that will make you weak and a life
victim all over again cementing what you used to think as fact. Action is a
necessary step we need to take. Once you conquer your fear strangely another
fear appears different from the last but you can conquer that too.
Unless you are willing to test yourself and take that risk
you will never know life from a point of strength. All tests will not end in
success some will be failures but that is part of the learning. When you are
willing to attempt something that is worthwhile to you (and not anybody else)
you will understand that experience is the key to unlocking your potential and
beating the fear.
Benjamin Disraeli an English statesman years ago once said
‘Experience is the child of thought, and thought is the child of Action’
First we must think before taking action and when we do something
taking action only then will we know and have learned something. Do that and
you challenge the fear that holds you back and keeps you a victim operating
from a position of weakness in your life.
Grab hold of life and hold on tight! Live it! In the words
of Sir Richard Branson ‘Screw it, let’s do it’
Life is a journey with twists and turns, ups and downs. Are
you ready for it?
John Frederick
